Matching a New Gate to an Old Fence

It is the most common request we get and the one where honest expectations matter most.

Fence Gate Matching Existing

Material and profile can be matched

Board width, spacing, cap detail and post style can all be reproduced. On a fence built to any standard pattern this part is straightforward.

Bring us a photograph and we can usually identify what is there before we arrive.

Colour is the hard part

New cedar next to eight-year-old cedar is not the same colour and will not be for a season or two. Stain narrows the gap; it does not close it immediately.

Anyone promising an invisible match on weathered timber is setting you up to be disappointed.

Metal matches better

Powder-coated metal in the same profile and colour gets you very close, because the finish does not weather the way timber does.

If matching matters more than anything else, that is worth knowing at the design stage.

Sometimes contrast is the better answer

A deliberately different gate reads as a design choice. A gate that is almost the same reads as a repair.

On plenty of Whittier frontages a black metal gate in a timber fence looks better than a timber gate that not quite matches.

What we will tell you

How close it will get, and when. If the answer is that it will look mismatched for a year, we would rather say so before you commit than after.

That conversation takes two minutes and saves a great deal of disappointment.

What to know about fence contractor in Whittier

How long it takes

Most fence jobs are measured in days rather than weeks. What stretches a schedule is removal of what is already there, difficult access, or ground that fights the digger.

A straightforward residential run is usually a day or two on site once materials are in. Posts go in first and the concrete needs time before anything hangs on them, so the work is not continuous.

Repair or replace?

We would rather fix what you have than sell you something new. Telling a Whittier customer their fence has years left in it is a shorter conversation, but it is the one that gets us called back.

Replacement makes sense when several posts have gone along the same run, when the frame has racked out of square, or when repeated repairs have already cost more than half the price of new. Short of that, repair almost always wins.

What Los Angeles County weather does to it

Santa Ana winds do the visible damage. A solid privacy fence is a sail, and all of that load goes into the posts, which is why a footing that seemed fine for years fails in one October night.

Sun is the quiet killer here. UV breaks the surface down and greys the timber, which is cosmetic at first and structural eventually. Sprinklers are worse: a head throwing onto the boards keeps them permanently damp at the base.

What Fence Contractor Whittier usually involves

The visible part of a fence is the cheap part. What we spend time on in Whittier is the posts, the footings and the framing, because those are what decide whether the run is still straight in ten years.

Most jobs start the same way: we walk the line with you, look at what is already there and find out what is actually failing. On a Whittier property that usually means checking the posts before anything else, because a fence almost always gives up at ground level long before the boards do.

What Fence Contractor costs in Whittier

We quote after seeing the property, always. Anyone giving you a firm figure without knowing your ground is guessing, and that guess is rarely in your favour once they arrive.

Price comes down to size, material, access and what has to come out first. A straight run on flat ground with a driveway beside it is quick. The same job down a narrow side return with a hedge in the way is not.

Choosing someone in Whittier

Get the material spec in writing, not the brand name. Ask whether the bottom rails are reinforced on long spans, and whether there is ground clearance under the boards.

Ask how deep the post holes are going and how much concrete goes in each one. Ask what fixings they are using. Those two answers tell you whether someone is thinking about year ten or Friday afternoon.

Will a new fence match my existing one?

We match material, spacing and finish as closely as we can. New timber next to weathered timber will not be an exact match until it has aged a season, and we will say so up front rather than after.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes. Removal and disposal is priced as part of the job rather than sprung on you at the end, and it is a real cost when there are concrete footings to break out.

How far in advance do I need to book?

It varies with the season. Wind and rain months are busier because more people are calling about damage. We give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one.
